10 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Digital Marketing Agency

SHORT ANSWER

Before hiring a Nigerian digital marketing agency, ask about past case studies, the tools they use, realistic timelines, KPI reporting, and who manages your account.

I’ve sat on both sides of this conversation, pitching Oxgital to founders and, before that, vetting agencies myself when I worked in-house. The founders who get burned almost always skip the same step: they hire on a good pitch instead of good answers. Ask an agency these ten questions before you sign anything, and you’ll know within the first meeting whether they’re worth your budget.

Can You Show Me Case Studies or Examples of Previous Work?

Ask for references, case studies, and client testimonials before anything else. You’re checking two things: whether the agency has real experience in your industry, and whether their past results match what they’re promising you now.

Be specific when you ask. A generic portfolio page tells you less than a written case study that shows the starting problem, what the agency did, and the actual outcome. When I show founders our Àlàyò fashion brand case study or our Tursan solar energy project, I want them asking the same pointed questions about timeline and budget that got those results, not just skimming the headline number.

How Do You Stay Updated With Industry Trends?

A competent agency should be able to name the specific sources, tools, or communities it uses to stay current, not just say “we keep learning.” Google’s algorithm changes several times a year, social platforms shift their features constantly, and an agency running last year’s playbook on this year’s budget is wasting your money.

At Oxgital, I follow Google’s own Search Central updates directly rather than relying on secondhand blog summaries, and our team shares what we’re learning on LinkedIn. If an agency can’t point you to where they get their information, that’s worth asking about again before you sign.

What Tools Do You Use?

Digital marketing runs on tools, and a good agency should list theirs without hesitation. Expect to hear names like Google Analytics, Google Search Console, and a keyword research platform such as SEMrush or Ahrefs, alongside whatever ad platforms your campaign needs.

The tools themselves matter less than whether the agency can explain why each one fits your specific goals. If they list a long stack of software but can’t tell you what each piece is actually doing for your account, that’s a red flag worth pressing on.

Can You Guarantee I’ll Rank at the Top of Google?

No agency can guarantee a top Google ranking, and any agency that says yes without qualification is one to walk away from. Google controls its own algorithm, and no outside agency has access to override it.

What a good answer sounds like instead: “here’s our plan to improve your ranking, and here’s why we think it’ll work.” If they follow “yes” with specific strategies rather than just a promise, you’re likely in good hands. If they stop at “yes,” keep looking.

What Goals Are You Setting for My Project?

A serious agency sets SMART goals: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound, based on research into your site and industry, not a generic template. At Oxgital, I start by pulling a client’s existing traffic and conversion data before setting any target, so the goal reflects where the business actually stands rather than a number that sounds good in a pitch.

If an agency gives you a goal before looking at your analytics, ask where that number came from.

When Can I Expect to See Results?

Organic SEO results typically take three to six months to show up in a measurable way, because search engines need time to crawl, index, and re-rank your site. Anyone promising immediate organic results is either misunderstanding how search engines work or overselling you.

Paid campaigns move faster since you’re buying visibility rather than earning it, but even those need a few weeks of data before an agency can optimize them properly. If an agency promises instant SEO wins, that’s the moment to ask harder questions.

What KPIs Do You Track and How Will You Report Them?

You’re paying for this work, so you should know exactly what’s being measured and how often you’ll see it. A solid agency tracks KPIs tied to your actual goals: organic traffic, keyword rankings, conversion rate, or revenue growth, and reports on a set schedule rather than only when you ask.

Ask to see a sample report before you sign. If they can’t produce one, that tells you something about how reporting will actually go once you’re a client.

How Do You Measure and Report ROI?

ROI isn’t just the difference between what you spent and what you earned back. Ask how the agency ties specific campaign activity to revenue, whether they’re tracking lead quality and not just lead volume, and whether they’re accounting for customer lifetime value on top of the first sale.

An agency that can only point to traffic or engagement numbers, without connecting those numbers to your revenue, isn’t measuring ROI. They’re measuring activity.

Who Will I Be Working With Directly?

You need one named point of contact, and it’s worth confirming upfront that this isn’t the same person who sold you the contract. Some agencies give you direct access to the specialists doing the work. Others route everything through an account manager.

Neither approach is automatically better, but you should know which one you’re signing up for before you start, so you’re not surprised three weeks in.

What Will You Need From Me?

This question tells you a lot about how the partnership will actually run. Your agency brings marketing expertise, but you know your customers, your sector, and your business better than anyone they’ll hire to run your account.

A good agency will ask for your input on target audience, brand voice, and what’s actually worked or failed for you before. If they don’t ask, they’re likely building your strategy on assumptions instead of your actual business.

Choosing the Right Agency for Your Business

These ten questions aren’t about catching an agency in a lie. They’re about seeing how an agency thinks before you’re paying them to think for your business. The right agency answers most of these without hesitation, because they’re already doing the work these questions are checking for.
